Here is Just a small idea that worked well with one of my year 9 groups. This was the connector activity from a lesson on personal descriptions.
I gave the class pictures of four different celebrities and a list of connectives which they don’t usually use and that imply the subordinate phrase in a sentence will be to the contrary of the first (e.g. whilst, however, although, on the other hand etc…)
I found that they were writing more complex sentences in their writing later on because they were then trying to describe what people were like and also not like having now being challenged to use the connectives later on in that lesson.
