Quizlet is one of the most versatile free apps that I’ve seen in a while. It is essentially a flashcard style, vocabulary learning tool however it has a lot of features that then help take your input (writing the words and meanings and/or definitions) much further.
From the point of view of an MFL teacher, I have spent a lot of time in the past creating flashcards for students so that they can learn vocabulary, carefully differentiated and ultimately not the best use of my time (I didn’t get into teaching to perfect my scissor skills).
Quizlet changes this completely as it allows you put in vocabulary with its meaning definition on the flip side of the card. You then have a range of features that make this app the absolute gem that it is. Firstly, you can set the language either side of the card so that the word is pronounced properly for the student in either language with a highly accurate accent, fantastic for independent learning, imagine different sets of cards for differet sets of cards for different students, all being taught then correct pronunciation.
However, the real gift of Quizlet has not begun yet. You can share you cards online via an email which contains a link (this of course can be copy and pasted and added to a QR code if, for example, you have disabled the email accounts on your student’s tablets). You then have a range of vocabulary tests automatically generated based on your vocabulary input. Flashcards, Teacher, Learn, Speller, Test and Scatter all with results generated at the end for immediate and personalised AfL. All of this by simply typing up some words with definitions and if you really want to embrace the Jim Smith lazy teacher spirit, why not ask students to create vocabulary sets for other classes to use? The only question that remains is: “what will you do with you extra gained time from reduced planning?”.
